Bible Verse When Peter Said Thou Art the Christ
A mutual belief of millions of professing Christians is that Peter was designated by Jesus to exist the foundation or caput of the church. Because of this, great honour is paid to Peter to this day by these same professed believers. When asked why they believe this, many will quote Matthew 16:18-19 every bit the reply, explaining that Jesus said Peter was the rock on which the church building would be built. This encounter left the disciples with the idea of people wondering who Jesus was in their minds.
What did Jesus mean by edifice His church upon a rock?
At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus expounded upon this idea when He asked the disciples, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?" Their answers varied. They said that some said that He was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or 1 of the prophets. Jesus and so asked them directly, "Just whom say ye that I am?" Simon Peter answered and said, "G fine art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus responded to Peter by saying, 'Blessed fine art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath non revealed it unto thee, simply my Father which is in heaven. And I say besides unto thee, That yard fine art Peter, and upon this stone I volition build my church building; and the gates of hell shall not prevail confronting it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of sky: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be jump in heaven: and whatsoever k shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in sky'" (Matthew 16:17-19).
So, what did Jesus hateful when He referred to building His church upon this rock? First, Jesus stated that Peter did not come up with his reply on his own, but that it was revealed to him by God the Father in heaven. Second, when Jesus said, "…thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church…", He was making two linguistic points. The first point was a comparison of the proper noun Peter to the word stone. The New Testament was written in Greek. The name Peter in Greek ispetros, meaning a pebble or small stone. The discussion for rock in the Greek ispetra, pregnant a massive rock or bedrock. Jesus was making the linguistic indicate that this simple truth that God had revealed to Peter, the pebble, about Jesus existence the Christ, the rock.
The second linguistic point was that the stone was the foundation or bedrock upon which He would build His church. This was a reference to salvation through Jesus the Christ. This is referred to in several other passages as follows:
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a rock, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall non make haste. (Isaiah 28:16)
Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew y'all to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. Only he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an business firm upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it vicious; and the ruin of that firm was neat. (Luke 6:47-49)

Information technology is clear from these passages that the church was built upon Jesus Christ, not Peter. Consider for a moment what Jesus said just afterwards to Peter in Matthew 16:20-23. Jesus told the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ. Then Jesus started explaining how He must go in to Jerusalem to suffer and be killed and exist raised again on the third day. When Peter heard this, he rebuked Jesus! Peter told Jesus to stay away from there so that it doesn't happen to Him. Jesus responded by telling Peter "Get thee behind me, Satan: one thousand fine art an offence unto me: for k savour rest not the things that be of God, only those that exist of men" (Matthew xvi:23).
Focusing on what Jesus said to Peter, it is hard to believe that Jesus would accept meant that He was going to build His church building on Peter, whom He referred to as Satan and an criminal offense. To suggest otherwise, would mean that Jesus was mistaken almost Peter or that Jesus would build His church on satanic man-made values with Peter as the head. While it is articulate that some churches have built their foundation on satanic man-fabricated values, this was not the foundation that Jesus built the church upon.
Conclusion
Many professing Christians believe that Peter was designated by Jesus to exist the foundation or head of the church. They base their belief on an out of context interpretation of Matthew sixteen:17-19. Instead, Jesus referred to Peter being a small-scale pebble that understood the real foundation of the church, Jesus Christ. Reading this passage in proper context along with supporting verses shows us that Jesus is the Christ, the Stone of our salvation.
